Landscape Lighting Installation - What a Homeowner Needs to Know
The CAST System of Landscape Lighting Installation.
What is the CAST Lighting method of installation?
The CAST method of landscape lighting installation was developed by David Beausoleil, founder of CAST Lighting and one of the industry's leading authorities. Based upon years of his own experience and research, Mr. Beausoleil adopted the best methods of wiring and splicing that ensure optimal electrical integrity, ease of installation and long-term performance even when subjected to the most severe and corrosive environments.
In addition, David Beausoleil engineers and manufactures lighting fixtures, wire and power supplies (transformers) that can be easily and effectively installed using the CAST method.
In brief, the CAST method of landscape lighting installation has the following components
- Planning. A stepwise approach that includes electrical calculations to predict voltage loss; equipment selection to ensure optimal performance; and planning for energy conservation.
- Installation. CAST Lighting manufactures installation tools designed specifically for low voltage landscape lighting. Techniques for using these tools are taught at CAST Lighting training events and complete installation instructions are included with each product.
- Testing and Voltage Adjustment. To ensure bulb longevity and performance, voltage levels at each fixture must be within a range of 10.5 volts to 12.0 volts. Measuring these voltages requires meters that are sensitive and accurate. CAST Lighting's Digital Volt/Ohm Meter is the only meter on the market specifically calibrated to this low voltage range. CAST Lighting transformers are engineered to provide flexibility and control to achieve and maintain the required voltage levels.
- Documentation and Maintenance. Accurate and permanent documentation of system details is critical to the long-term maintenance of a lighting system. CAST provides Fixture Record Tags and documentation forms for this purpose. While CAST systems require little maintenance, there are still a number of maintenance steps that are taught at our training seminars. If any product repair is required, all CAST products are designed to be field serviceable so components can be repaired or replaced in the field.
Can I do it myself?
The answer is 'Yes', but we highly recommend that you leave the installation to a CAST-trained installer. The CAST method of landscape lighting installation is not difficult to learn but most people find it necessary to attend a full-day CAST Lighting Hands-on Training Seminar. This seminar teaches the basics of installation and design and is primarily intended for professionals in the green industry, electrical or allied fields. In addition, you would probably not find it worthwhile to purchase the specialized installation and testing equipment.
In addition, while low voltage landscape lighting installation is safe, it is an electrical installation. Depending upon you locality, electrical installations may be subject to restrictions and require permits and inspections. These restrictions may be based upon the National Electric Code or other guidelines. Your installer will know about these and is best equipped to ensure their compliance.
Will a CAST Lighting Installation damage my property?
Absolutely not. Low voltage landscape lighting wiring can be laid in a shallow trench. Contractors use tools that pry open a narrow opening in turf areas. These trenches are then pushed back closed without damaging the turf.
CAST Tree Lights are mounted with special brackets that leave an air gap between the tree and the bracket to prevent the growth of damaging mold.
Many CAST installers are skilled landscapers that know plant material and know how to protect it. Your property is in good hands with a CAST-trained installer.
